Valentine’s Day, while I’m sure is mainly a day that was made up to increase the profit margin in the flower and chocolate industry, is still one of my favorite holidays. It’s such a happy day, or at least it can be with a little perspective, especially for those who know the love of Christ.
While the Day-O-Love can be superficial, I don’t see it as such. A day to focus on those we love and on The One who loves us most. Now that’s worth celebrating! While most people think of it as a purely romantic holiday, I believe it can be so much more!
This year I’m going to take Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to teach my kids about what love should be. How our heavenly Father loves us, and how we should love others.
The most well known Bible verse about love is of course in 1 Corinthians.
“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.8a Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
And wouldn’t you know it, this verse can easily be broken down to focus on one attribute of love per day for 14 days. So I have created a Valentine’s Day countdown banner! I went with a classic almost vintage inspired design for it. I love the deep colors and clean script, and the sweet roses are so pretty!
Starting on February 1, the kids will take turns turning over one heart per day and getting a mini lesson on how God loves us and how we should love each other.
As a bonus I’m hoping it will be a good visual tool to point to when breaking up sibling squabbles. It’s also a great memorization tool. I think we could all use this verse fresh in our minds. I know I could.
