We’re doing some fine motor practice with some scissor skills! Squeaks is getting pretty good with her little safety scissors and now Little Dude is showing interest in learning to use them. Well, of course he is. It’s an opportunity to cut things up and make a mess. That’s his jam!
Anyhow, I’m on the hunt for fun ways to work scissor practice into our week. Since it’s Spring time I thought I’d go with Squeaks love of bees and create a few fun cutting sheets. And if big sister is into it, Little Dude is sure to be excited to join in. These might be a bit beyond him at two years old but he’ll have fun ripping into them with his little scissors while sister practices.
They’re super easy to use. Just hand your kiddo a pair of safety scissors and have them try and cut along the lines. On the first sheet they will cut along the path of some bees flying in a very unusual pattern (wink wink). On the second sheet they’ll need to follow along the stems of some Spring time flowers.
These are fairly challenging so it’s also a lesson in patience, especially for little perfectionists like Squeaks. She got a little frustrated with the zigzag pattern so we decided to break the sheet up and do a couple lines a day instead of trying to cut the whole sheet at once. Taking smaller bites and practicing a little at a time is working much better.
I found some other fun Spring time scissor activities the kids will get a kick out of.
- Check out this fun grass crown from Creative Connections For Kids. I can just picture the kids running around the backyard in these. And it’s so clever to draw a line around the inside so they know not to cut too far.
- These paper plate flowers from The Resourceful Mama are so cute and so simple to put together. I love the ideas she gives to extend the activity too.
- I love the idea of using things from around the house for scissor practice, like these rainbow straws from Frogs, Snails, and Puppy Dog Tails. Wouldn’t it be fun to string them together and make rainbow necklaces too!?
- This nature cutting tray from Munchkins and Moms is totally the business. I can’t wait to try this with the kiddos. Gather cool Spring time flowers and leaves and just start cutting!
- This Spring tulip name puzzle from How Wee Learn is a lot like the name puzzles we keep in our Busy Binders. I love the idea of Squeaks creating her own puzzle though and the cute flower theme is perfect for Spring.
UPDATE: I recently expanded this set to include alphabet matching and counting activities! Check it out!
