How cool was that lunar eclipse a few nights ago!? I stood there watching the moon slowly turn red, just totally amazed at how “the heavens declare the glory of God”. It was incredible to be this tiny little dot of a human able to physically witness the movement of our planet. The thought that this huge event is still just a blip in our solar system is mind boggling.
There are so many ways to teach the incredible strength and glory of God; DNA, the human eye, the duck billed platypus. But our solar system might be the most awe-inspiring. The size alone! The power of our sun, the massive rings on Saturn, the perfect life-sustaining placement of Earth. It’s the definition of awesome.
For my tiny kiddos, time and space are still concepts that stretch the imagination. Phrases like “we’re leaving in twenty minutes” or “we’re three miles from the park” are practically a foreign language. So expecting them to fully grasp the magnitude of the solar system, the distance to each planet, it’s just not going to happen yet.
It’s sure fun to talk about the planets though! They can grasp that these are far away places and appreciate how creative our God is. Describing the red rocky surface of Mars, the unimaginable cold of Neptune, and looking up pictures from the Hubble telescope are just a few ways for little ones to enjoy and learn from our solar system!
That’s why I created my new Solar System Printable Memory Game!
The front of the game shows the planets of our solar system in order by distance from the sun. Each one is marked by the planet’s outline, so the object is to match the cut out planet with it’s corresponding outline.

On the back side (although, you could print it on a separate page) are a bunch of fun facts on each planet. Honestly, I could have written a mini book on each one. I learned so much just from researching this printable. I kept it to a paragraph each though and tried as hard as I could to use terms a younger child could grasp, but new concepts could be easily explained. There is plenty of room to introduce new conversations and fun new ideas. Topics like distance, temperature, gas vs. solid, rotation, and mass might expand into another whole lesson of their own.
This printable is a great way to introduce the topic of our solar system, and point out how creative our God is and how His majesty is so apparent. I look forward to pairing this new game with my creation game and talking about how God spoke this amazing solar system into existence. Mind blowing!
