The Romans Road is a set of verses from the book of Romans that simply and clearly lays out the gospel. It’s a tool we can use to better understand and teach the “path” to salvation. Again, this is simply a tool. I can’t say this enough. You are not responsible for your child’s salvation. But you are responsible for presenting them with truth and raising them up in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). We have been given the task of sharpening their minds and feeding their souls, to be sent out into the world to make an eternal impact (Psalm 127:3-5). It is no small task, so helpful tools are welcome!
Enter my new Romans Road activity set!
This is far from a new concept, however making it pretty is of value and you know I like me some color with my truth! This activity set is designed to be engaging, easy to use, and fun!
The set includes a mini poster, a hands-on activity page, a study page with the verses from Romans, and tracing pages to help your student commit the verses to memory.
The path begins with “The Problem”- all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).
“As it is written:’None is righteous, no, not one.'” (Romans 3:10) This might bring up the question “What is sin?” My go-to for this response is from The New City Catechism. “Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world He created. Not being or doing what God’s law requires.” “But mom, why does everyone sin?” Good question. Let’s look at Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” Sin entered the world through one man, separating us from God and spreading sin to all men. Sin is now part of everyone’s nature and we need God to save us!
This brings us to “The Price”.
Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Sinning, Ignoring and/or rejecting God and not following His laws has a consequence- death. “But mom, doesn’t everyone die? Isn’t it just normal?” Wow kid, you ask great questions! Death wasn’t part of the original plan. Death came into the world through Adam and Eve’s sin. And it’s more than a physical death, it’s also a spiritual death (separation from God). But thankfully, God had a plan and, in His mercy, made a way for us to escape the punishment for our sins. A perfect plan, so that we “may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
“The Plan” was big and sad, but super effective.
“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) God sent His son to pay the consequence, to take our punishment and die for us. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) So now, even though we are sinners by nature, we can have eternal life with Christ in heaven (because, plot twist, He didn’t stay dead!!).
“Mom! How can I show God I believe in Him?” That’s your best question yet! Let’s take a look at “The Praise”.
Romans 10:9-10 says “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” That’s it. Simple and yet it’s not easy to understand, I know. But it’s not up to us. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8) It’s all because of God’s grace (undeserved favor).
We confess and believe, and He keeps His promise. “The Promise” is salvation.
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13) We are forgiven of our sins, we have eternal life, and “we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
If there’s only one thing a mother should want for her children it’s a strong knowledge of their faith and the ability to give a defense for the hope that is in them (1 Peter 3:15). Any Christian mother will tell you that she prays for her children’s salvation. To know and trust their Father and love Him. Praying for this is a top priority and teaching our children why is equally so. The Romans Road is a simple and impactful tool to help us in our task.
