Some questions about reading through the Bible with kids that I’m sure I’ll get:
Do you read EVERYTHING? (sexual immorality, murder, all the sin!)
Do you make the kids sit still while you read?
Nope. And I don’t think that’s unusual. A child capable of sitting completely still while being read to probably doesn’t exist.😂 As it isn’t in their nature, I don’t fight it. I do ask that they be as quiet as possible though. To encourage this, I’ve made certain expectations clear. Number one, my kids know not to interupt unless they have a question or need help with something (bathroom breaks, etc.). Second, our front living room where we do our reading is a no-noisy-toys zone. And third, this is the only time I DON’T encourage sharing. Each child must choose an independent quiet toy and may not share. Noise and interuptions are inevitable, but don’t let that discourage you from reading!
How do you decide where to start and how often/how much do you read?
I don’t think it’s necessary to start with a specific book, although some don’t make as much sense as others (I’m looking at you Leviticus). I see the value in going book by book from Genesis, and I see value in starting with the New Testament in Matthew. The amazing thing is that the whole book, even though it was written by nearly 40 different human authors over 1,500 years, it all points to Christ! It all has the same message and it’s all worth reading. So just like praying for discernment on what to read, pray for discernment on where to read. And read as often and as much as you can! If you’re in a season where your kiddos attention spans can take five minutes of reading, read for five minutes. If they will listen daily for an hour, do it! There are no rules!
