There’s no denying that Squeaks loves math. Even to the point where I find little addition equations scribbled on the corners of coloring pages. But as with any new subject, there is a challenge here and there. Place value has been Squeaks first real math challenge.
When we began the section of our Masterbooks curriculum that covers place value, I didn’t think much of it. It actually really surprised me that Squeaks was having trouble catching on. So we slowed down and did review for a few weeks. Isn’t that one of the greatest perks of homeschool?! Going at your child’s pace.
Anyway, after lots of practice counting out groups of ten popsicle sticks and counting chips to represent groups of one and ten, it still wasn’t quite clicking. So I started thinking of different ideas to help Squeaks grasp this concept. That’s when I created my Place Value Robot!
Squeaks has always loved robots! Her second birthday was robot themed and I even have video of little two-year-old Squeaks talking in a robot voice. It’s insanely cute…but I digress.
Here’s a look at my Place Value Robot!
Once the page is laminated you’ll be able to write any two digit number on the robot’s “screen” with a dry erase marker! Since we’re at the very beginning of learning place values, two digits are as far as we’ll go (this also matches up with our curriculum’s teaching). Visit my Amazon store to see what products I recommend for assembling my activities.
Included with the robot are all his cute little buttons. Single buttons are placed on the ones panel, and buttons in groups of ten on the tens panel. This has really helped Squeaks visualize groups of ten and one more easily. Squeaks has a ton of fun pulling the buttons on and off and writing the number on the robot’s screen herself.
It’s a great activity for review, and very convenient for Squeaks to do semi-independently as well. I can be working on setting up our next lesson and just call out numbers to her. I let her work and then double check it when she’s ready. It gives her a real sense of accomplishment and the added benefit of writing the number herself.
Overall, this cute little activity has been a great addition and compliment to our math lesson!
