I got practically giddy when I came up with my newest printable for learning the books of the Bible. Just ask Josh. I’m pretty sure I even did a little happy dance.
Embarrassingly enough, memorizing the books of the Bible is something I haven’t even mastered yet. I’m so excited to help Squeaks learn, and at the same time help myself learn.
I felt like trying to memorize 66 individual books all at once would be overwhelming for a preschooler though. So I decided to go with baby steps and learn the books by category. Have you ever realized that the books of the Bible can be categorized by topic and style? It was a recent revelation for me too. So I came up with this great books of the Bible memory game.
My goal is to help Squeaks (and as they grow, Little Dude and Flash too) know Gods word as intimately as possible. Memorization is such an important skill to have and a key to having Gods word written on our hearts. The Bible is our map to a Christ-centered life. I want my children to have every opportunity to learn and grow in their walks, and it starts with knowing the map inside and out.

So here’s how my books of the Bible game works:
Each game sheet (Old and New Testament) pictures a bookcase with the object being to match the group of books to the correct category or shelf. Old Testament book are broken into five categories: law, history, poetry, major prophets, and minor prophets. New Testament books are in six categories: the gospels, history, Paul’s letters to churches, Paul’s letters to friends, general letters, and prophesy.
Each group of books is cut out together and placed on the appropriate shelf. Of course I laminated mine and added Velcro dots to keep the books in place. You can check your work with an answer key (I printed mine directly on the back) and read a little about each group of books. I kept the descriptions and wording simple for younger kiddos but I think it still leaves room for some great discussion.
I’m excited to start memorizing the books of the Bible and help Squeaks learn about her creator in a more substantial way. I think these games will start some really fun conversations about history, how we grow closer to Him, and what it means to be His child. I can’t wait!
