Living in Southern California does not lend itself easily to learning about the weather through a variety of hands-on experiences. Over the past few weeks though my little ones and I have had the unusual pleasure of enjoying a few rainy days and a little day trip up to the snow in our local mountains. This sparked a new interest in the topic of weather and we’ve been having fun working it into our lessons.
If you follow my Instagram you’ve seen our most recent weather fun. We played around with a fun cloud experiment (instructions), and a wind experiment (instructions) that turned into an awesome loose-parts play session. Loose parts play will have to be covered more in another post because it’s been a huge hit with my kiddos and I’ve just started learning about the great benefits.
Anyhow, our weather play has led to some new printable activities! A fun little bundle of winter-themed math activities and a hand-drawn set of three-part weather cards with a matching tracing page.
First up, the new weather pack!
A few customers contacted me through my Etsy shop asking for more of my circle time activities. I thought it was a great idea and I’m happy to oblige! My new weather tracing page and matching three-part cards, while simple and clean, are still beautiful with hand-drawn images and fun colors. I especially love the way the cards look after I rounded corners with this fun little tool!
The set matches my weather wheel, so I added the three-part cards and tracing page as bonus activities. The idea is to build word and image recognition. One set of cards is complete with the weather image and word together (i.e. a picture of the sun with the word “sunny” under it). Then there is a set of just the picture, and a third set of just the words (hence three-part cards). This activity was a great review of letter recognition and letter sounds for Squeaks (“What letter does the word ‘sunny’ start with?”).

My new Winter Math Bundle is packed with great learning tools in one easy-to-use download.
Incorporating weather into our math lessons has been fun with this new winter math bundle. It includes a count and graph activity (just like in my Fall Activity Bundle), a patterns practice page, and a set of number play dough mats.

The count and graph page introduces basic graphing skills, number sense, and counting practice. On the patterns practice page I also incorporated a little scissor skills and gluing practice. Finally, the play dough mats allow your kiddos to practice number recognition, tracing practice, word association, penmanship, counting, and number sense. Now that’s a great list of benefits in one simple little activity! You can even add in fine motor practice depending on what manipulative you use for counting. We enjoy using mini erasers. Some other ideas would be play dough (obviously), counting chips, or snap cubes.

Both of these weather bundles have been a big hit with my kids. They’re a great way to enjoy the winter season here in sunny CA. Let me know how your kiddos like them!
