Welcome to day three of my 10 day series on game schooling with preschoolers! Today we’re covering color games. Color games are a perfect introduction to board games if you’re playing with very young children. There is generally little to no reading involved and little ones are always attracted to the fun colors! Thinking back now, baby’s first colors books were always my kids favorites, so color games are naturally some of our favorites as well!
Our favorite board games:
How many times can you play Candyland without going loopy? A lot, according to my kids, but it’s most definitely effective and a great game to learn and practice our colors. Throw candy and the silly game board characters into the mix and it’s a winner. Candyland is a classic for sure, but It’s just the beginning of our color game schooling.
Another one of our favorite game schooling color board games is Sneaky Snacky Squirrel! It’s just as cute as it sounds, and great for practicing color recognition and sorting.
This adorable little game is so easy to set up. There’s no reading needed. You simply spin the game wheel and use the squirrel squeezer (a cute set of squirrel shaped oversized tweezers) to pick up an acorn in the matching color. The first player to gather all five colors of acorns wins!
It says ages 3+ on the box but my youngest (almost two) enjoys playing too. If you read my game schooling benefits and tips post you’ll remember the suggestion to go easy on sticking to the rules with littles. My two year old is still working on those fine motor skills needed to grip the squirrel squeezer to pick up the acorns. He tends to pick up the acorn with his hands and place it in the tweezers. And that’s perfectly fine with me! Just keep an eye on the younger players since those acorns can be a choking hazard.
Overall, we love this game for practicing colors and the tweezers even add in a fine motor skills bonus! Just check out that concentration tongue on Little Dude in the pictures. Lol!
Color game printables:
I’ve collected a few other printable color game schooling options for you too. Perfect to keep in a busy binder and easier to store than a game box, or if you don’t feel like running to the store for a new game.
- Check out this cute Bears and Bunnies Spring Colors game from Warm Hearts. You can literally print every part of the game, including the game pieces.
- How about this great printable color bingo game from Fun With Mama. So simple and fun!
- And from yours truly, try my free color hunt wheel. We like using ours indoors on rainy days or outdoors in the yard or on a walk. This one is always a hit!
