I think I say this every year but I just LOVE this time of year! Easter holds so much meaning for our family for so many reasons. So many of our biggest happy memories happened around Easter.
As we move forward in our parenting journey, I’m really looking forward to watching our kiddos grow in their faith. Easter is the beginning of our new relationship with Christ. It’s because of Christ’s sacrifice that we are adopted into His family. This is such a powerful message. And for a family built through adoption, it adds even more sweetness to the blessing.
I confess, even though I grew up in the church, it wasn’t until I was older that I began to view the events of the Bible as connected, chronological, and historical, and not just as individual stories. I want my kids to grow up knowing that the Bible is completely true and real, and comprehend the weight of it all (as much as they can). This will take time of course, but it’s my hope and prayer that I can help them grasp these concepts at an early age.
Holy Week Banner: Countdown to Easter
This banner is a small step toward that goal. It’s an interactive and fun way to convey the facts and events leading up to Easter Sunday. Each day has corresponding verses to read and as the week progresses we move the clothespin marker from one day to the next. I chose verses with as much detail as I could for each day. Of course sometimes one gospel will give more detail than another, and then there are all the verses that could reference prophesy being fulfilled, but since this is mostly for the kids I didn’t want to overwhelm them. The verses referenced on the banner cover the pertinent facts for the day.
I encourage you to read beyond the verses I reference. Check out these sites for further reading to correspond with each day of the week:
- Passion Week Scripture Reading List from Do Not Depart
- Holy Week Timeline Visualization from Bible Gateway Blog
- Easter Week In Real Time from The Gospel Coalition
I think this banner is a fun visual aid and tool to help get the kids excited to celebrate Easter. The week leading up to Christ’s resurrection is jam-packed full of action, richness, love, and sacrifice. I can’t wait to share it with my kiddos.
Here’s what you’ll need to assemble your banner:
- heavy card stock to print on
- scissors
- ribbon
- single hole punch
- a clothespin
- laminator and pouches (optional)

I love your countdown banner. I was like you and grew up going to church, but didn’t understand the full picture until I was older. It’s great that you’re starting off right with your own kids. Thanks for sharing about the Do Not Depart Lent readings. I’ve been reading through them every day myself and enjoying the journey.
