As Christian parents we are called to equip our children to face the world as servants of God. Onward Christian Soldiers remains a popular Sunday School song because it holds true. But have you ever thought about it? Really thought about preparing your five, six, seven year old for spiritual battle. And depending on their daily environment, it may also be an emotional or even physical battle, and the Armor of God becomes a necessity in a very real way.
While the verses about the Armor of God are metaphorical, they are some of the most real metaphors I’ve ever read. Can anything cut through a hard heart as swiftly as the word of God? Is there any better protection from the harshness of this world than a shield of faith, and a mind that is grounded and firm in it’s salvation? Our children need these tools, and in my opinion, the earlier the better.
This is an important topic, not only for your own children as individuals, but also as part of the full body of Christ. Psalm 127:4 refers to children as “arrows in the hands of a warrior”. Children are weapons. We, the warriors, must sharpen them to make a lasting impact on the world. Think of the changes they could make!
Yes, they are little and innocent and sweet, and your five year old may not fully grasp the metaphor. However, if you take the time to place this strong “peg” in their subconscious, it will be much easier to hang the heaviness of truth upon it later in life. So go slow, introduce the topic of spiritual warfare gently, but introduce it all the same.
I have created a tool to get you started! Your very own little Christian soldier to dress in the Armor of God.
It’s a simple yet impactful activity. Squeaks could hardly wait to get her hands on it long enough for me to take these pictures. And of course my little boys were immediately drawn to the sword. It really is a very exciting subject!

On the front, your kiddos can dress their little soldier in each piece of armor. On the back (or if you’d rather, printed on a separate page) you can read the impactful verses of Ephesians 6:10-18.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Along with the verses, you’ll find some vocabulary suggestions to discuss with your littles. Each new word is accompanied by a verse to further explain it’s meaning.
This is a simple, gentle, and fun activity to introduce a very big topic.
Take the conversation a bit deeper, and check out some of these other great resources:
Try out this super easy object lesson from Our Journey Westward. All it takes is a few oranges and a bowl of water to help your visual learners grasp the subject.
Check out these cute and free coloring pages from Religious Doodles. I find coloring pages are a great tool for keeping little hands busy during Bible lessons.
Read more on Teaching Kids About Spiritual Warfare in this article from focus On The Family. It’s a great way to prepare yourself for any big questions your littles might have for you.
If your kids are old enough to read and use the computer on their own, this series by Answers in Genesis is a great resource too. It’s worded specifically for kids and is super easy to understand.
I hope my Armor of God activity, along with these other resources, will bless you and your family!
Have you done an Armor of God lesson with your kids? What activities helped sharpen their understanding?
*Update!* I now offer a coloring and tracing pack to go with this activity!
Enjoy tracing the scripture for each item of the armor and coloring your own soldier. These fun extra activities create a mini unit study and give little hands something to keep busy during the lesson. Just select the “color and trace” option. Enjoy!
