I think every time I make a new activity it becomes my new favorite and my newest 7 Days Of Creation matching game is no exception. I love it!
If you can truly believe and accept the book of Genesis as historical fact, then the rest of the Bible should be no problem to believe. God speaking creation into existence is a pretty big idea for the mind to grasp. It’s a concept that sparks debate even among highly educated theologians. For kids though, it seems pretty easy to accept. Child like faith is a beautiful thing.
Introducing these big ideas at a young age lays a great foundation. We believe in a literal six days of creation and a young earth (approximately 6,000 years old). I want our children to understand that every part of the Bible is truth and it needs to be accepted in it’s entirety. Picking and choosing parts to believe is not an option.
The creation story is so reassuring too. God so effortlessly speaks the world into existence. His words formed the complexities of nature, the human eye, the solar system. Such beauty. It makes the fact that, out of all his creations, he loves us above all that much sweeter. And it makes our fears, problems, and worries that much smaller. Another concept I want my children to understand and cling to.
Enter, this fun and simple matching game. A great way to begin at the beginning!
Here’s how my 7 Days Of Creation Matching Game works:
Just like with my Ten Commandments game, I knew I had to use mostly images since preschoolers are still not quite reading. So for each day of creation I designed a cute little icon circle. Included with the game sheet and icons is an “answer key” with Genesis 1:1-2:3 matched to each icon. I printed my answer key on the back of the game sheet, laminated it, and used clear velcro dots to match the day and icon.

As you read each day’s verses with your kiddos you can have them find the matching icon and place it on the corresponding circle on the game sheet. Once you’ve read it through remove all the icons again, shuffle them up and see if your little one can put them back in order and remember what God created that day.
Squeaks really enjoyed this game and got very excited when she was able to remember the correct order. When we got to day seven and I told her that God rested and that’s why we rest on Sundays and spend the day learning about Him, it lead perfectly back to my Ten Commandments game. We moved right into talking about commandment number four; “remember the sabbath and keep it holy.” In fact we decided to do the whole commandments game too!

Once school starts in the fall I can see us using this game as a jumping off point for a fun learning theme. Seems fitting to start preschool with the start of EVERYTHING!
Here are some ideas I’ve found to go with each day of creation:
Day 1– Trace our shadows outside with sidewalk chalk and talk about light and dark. Scratch art would be a fun fit too. Scratching off the dark surface to reveal the color underneath. (You can make your own scratch paper or go the pre-made route.)
Day 2– Talk about why the sky is blue. Look for shapes in the clouds. Make clouds in a jar.
Day 3– Talk about the parts of a flower. Go on a nature hunt. Cut open fruit with seeds (apples, peaches, watermelon) and talk about what helps seeds grow. Start the classic sprouting-seeds-in-a-jar experiment.
Day 4– Make moon sand. Make a solar oven and talk about how the suns heat can melt crayons, chocolate, etc.
Day 5– Go bird watching or make a bird feeder, and discuss the different kinds of birds. Play Ocean I Spy or an ocean movement game.
Day 6– Learn about the human body using a fun puzzle. Pretend play veterinarian with stuffed animals and talk about different animal classifications.
Day 7– Review and do some fun creation coloring pages.
There are so many fun activities that could go along with this matching game. I’m excited to see Squeaks absorb this knowledge and begin to grasp how awesome God’s creation is.
How are you laying a foundation in God’s word for your little ones? What are your favorite Bible activities?
